Théorie du module : Calcul algébrique

Puissances n-ième

(a) Définition

Définition - Soit \(a \in {\mathbb{R}_0}\), \(n \in {\mathbb{N}_0}\). La puissance \(n\)-ième de \(a\) est le nombre réel obtenu en multipliant \(a\) \(n\) fois par lui-même

\(a^n = a\cdot a\cdot \, \dots \,\cdot a, \ (n \text{ facteurs}, n >1).\)

Pour tout \(a \in {\mathbb{R}_0}\), \(n \in {\mathbb{N}_0}\), on a

\(\begin {array}{l} \displaystyle { a^0 = 1},\\[2mm] \displaystyle {a^1 = a},\\[2mm] \displaystyle { a^{-n} = {1\over a^n}},\\[2mm] \displaystyle { 0^{n} = 0}. \end{array}\)

Par exemple, on a \(10^0 = 2^0 = 8^0 = 1\), \(12^1 =12\), \(3^4 = 3\cdot 3\cdot 3\cdot 3 = 81\), \(\pi^2 = \pi \cdot \pi\),
\(3^{-4} =\dfrac{1}{3^4} =\dfrac{1}{81}\), \(0^3 = 0^{10} = 0\).

Remarque :

  • \(0^0\) n'est pas défini.
  • Toute puissance d'un réel positif est positive.
  • Toute puissance d'un réel négatif est positive si l'exposant est pair et négative si l'exposant est impair.

(b) Propriétés

Les puissances entières vérifient les propriétés suivantes : pour tout \(a , b \in {\mathbb{R}_0}\ ,\ m , n \in\mathbb{Z}\), on a

\(\begin {array}{l} \displaystyle {(a\cdot b)^m = a^m \cdot b^m},\\[2mm] \displaystyle { \Big( {{a\over b}}\Big) ^m = {a^m \over b^m}},\\[2mm] \displaystyle { (a^m )^n = a^{m\cdot n}},\\[2mm] \displaystyle {a^m \cdot a^n = a^{m + n}},\\[2mm] \displaystyle { {a^m \over a^n} = a^m \cdot a^{-n} = a^{m - n}}. \end{array}\)

Par exemple \( (2\cdot 3)^3 = 2^3 \cdot 3^3\), \(\left(\dfrac{4}{7}\right)^2 =\dfrac{16}{49}\), \((10^2)^3 = 10^6\), \(2^3 \cdot 2^2 =2^5\), \(\dfrac{2^3}{2^4} =\dfrac{1}{2}\).

On peut étendre la notion de puissance à des exposants fractionnaires.
